Alder wood is a closed-grain hardwood that is generally reddish-white or reddish-yellow to reddish in color. It is not very susceptible to cracking and is easy to stain.

It is often used as an alternative to expensive higher-grade woods.

Alder resembles birch when given a clear finish and when stained dark, it will look like walnut.
